Hall of Faith
And these all, having obtained a good report through faith, received not the promise. ~Hebrews 11:39
People often refer to Hebrew 11 a the “Hall of Faith” because of all the wonderful ways the people mentioned in this passage maintained their faithfulness to God. But if you study the lives of these people,  you would see they are all far from perfect. The list of great Old Testament believers includes liars, idolaters, adulterers, murderers, and coward. Yet these imperfect people still were faithful to God.
The Old Testament saints lived by faith in God and His promises, and their faith made them acceptable to Him. The ultimate fulfillment of God’s promises to them, as for us, came in Jesus Christ. That’s why the author of Hebrews tells us to fix our eyes on Jesus – our true example.
But these Old Testament saints died before Jesus was even born. Their faith in the promises of God was fulfilled in Christ. What is better for us is that we are able to know Christ personally and realize some of the benefits that come through faith in Him. We know the beauty of the gospel that Jesus died in our place to make us right with God. If people like Gideon, Rahab, and Samson could have faith in God, how much more should we after knowing Christ’s sacrifice for us?
Father, thank  You for giving me peace with You through Jesus. Strengthen my faith in You.
